Road Safety is a collaborative responsibility.
Our community is strong, and we are grateful for the ongoing collective support we show one another.
Our work is unperpinned by the Māori philosphy of kotahitanga / unity.
We have committed support for the PWASNZ work from the organisations below.
Ngā mihi nui to every supporter across Aotearoa and the world, many of whom have stood with us since day one.
“Equestrian Sports New Zealand is mindful of the increasing constraints being experienced by the equestrian community as suitable land and facilities become increasingly impacted upon by urban sprawl, the changing climate and facility issues.
Our riders rely on road routes for access to pathways and recreational reserves, especially within rural areas. We support Pass Wide & Slow New Zealand as it strives to make provisions for the horse riders of Aotearoa New Zealand.”
“NZPCA is in full support of Pass Wide and Slow NZ because the safety of our riders and their horses is paramount to what we do.”
“For many Māori, riding a horse along a road is a necessity rather than just recreational and improving safety for all road users is important to us. Te Hapori Hōiho – The National Māori Horse Association Aotearoa Trust supports Pass Wide and Slow New Zealand in advocating for improved status and awareness of equestrians safety on the road.”
“NZTR stands with the ‘Pass Wide & Slow’ movement, championing awareness to protect equestrians nationwide. Respect on the roads means safer journeys for our riders and horses.”
“Ever since horses were introduced to New Zealand in 1814 they have played an integral part in shaping our country, our heritage and our history. Today, NZ Horse Network has seen changes in horse access; often banned from historical bridle trails, forests and beaches, riders have taken to roads for either transport or recreational use. Riders and horses are at risk from speeding and inconsiderate drivers: they are vulnerable! NZ Horse Network wholeheartedly supports and thanks Pass Wide and Slow NZ, something needs to change to ensure horse and riders safety.”
“The safety of all road users, which includes people riding horses, is an important issue for our country.”
“PWASUK are thrilled to be working closely with PWASNZ and to see this important road safety message strongly supported.”
“Safety on the roads is a shared responsibility. Educating drivers on how to pass horses safely protects these vulnerable road users and helps prevent accidents that can have devastating consequences for both animals and people. SPCA supports initiatives that promote respectful and safe interactions between vehicles and animals on the road. Passing wide and slow is a simple act of care and patience that can make a huge difference in ensuring the safety and welfare of horses and their handlers.”
“We all deserve to get home safely. New Zealand must reduce harm on our streets and roads. That means setting safe speeds, legislation that protects everyone using our streets, and effective enforcement. That’s why CAN supports the Pass Wide and Slow road safety message.”
“Harness Racing NZ is proud to support the ‘Pass Wide and Slow’ campaign. Ensuring safety is a top priority for us, particularly in creating safer roads for our Standardbred participants and the wider equestrian community.”
“The Trust wholeheartedly supports the mahi of Pass Wide and Slow to protect the safety of all horses and riders on New Zealand roads. The effect of a fall from a startled horse can be catastrophic for the rider, and a loose horse can create more danger for other road users.
As part of a connected equestrian community throughout Aotearoa, the Trust is proud to support Pass Wide and Slow’s passionately driven education and awareness program. ”
“I am impressed with the ground that’s been covered by the PWASNZ team in raising awareness around horse rider safety on the road. It’s long overdue and has my full support.”
Winky Foley is a well known respected equestrian judge, horse breeder, and advocate for informed decision making. Winky also sits on the Te Hapori Hōiho BoT.
The PWASNZ team is delighted to have Winky’s invaluable insight and support as we work to be a strong united voice on behalf of the horse riding community.
“After participating in the first NZ awareness ride, we realised as riders we can report dangerous driving to the police, and action will be taken.”
“Waitaki Horse Trails support Pass Wide and Slow. We support the value of riding safely on roads, and on off road trails, the value of recreationally enjoying horse riding, along with the great mental health benefits it can provide for both rider and horse.”
“Working Equitation NZ fully supports the Pass Wide and Slow NZ campaign- Our members come from many disciplines and walks of life and many are regular road users with their horses. We hope with continued education and safety changes this will continue for the foreseeable future.”
“At Mākara Pony Club, we deeply value the safety of our riders, their horses, and everyone sharing the road. That’s why we’re proud to endorse the Pass Wide and Slow campaign, which raises awareness about the importance of safe driving around horses. Together, we can create safer roads for all.
Join us in spreading the message and making a commitment to pass wide and slow—because safety is a shared responsibility.
Let’s protect our riders, horses, and drivers. ”
“Our group is in full support of Pass Wide and Slow New Zealand’s work. A common theme in the experiences of local horse riders and carriage drivers is that many drivers do not slow down or give safe space when passing. Even horses confident and used to traffic can unexpectedly spook, ending up in the path of passing vehicles, motorbikes or cycles. Road verges are narrower, the volume and speed of traffic has increased throughout Hawkes Bay. Combined with a general lack of driver/ biker knowledge about road safety around horses this has made road riding a lottery with not much margin for error. ”
“The Bus and Coach Association supports Pass Wide & Slow NZ sharing the road, safe driving and showing courtesy to all road users.”
“The National Road Carriers Association supports the Pass Wide & Slow New Zealand initiative because by encouraging drivers to slow down and pass wide, we not only ensure the safety of horse riders but also promote a culture of respect and awareness on our roads. Every life matters, and a little extra space and patience can make all the difference in preventing accidents and fostering safer communities for everyone.”
“Transporting New Zealand supports Pass Wide & Slow in promoting road safety for riders and horses. As a group representing professional drivers, we want all road users - on two legs or four - to always be safe. We’re proud to spread the message to slow down to make things safe around horses.”
“New Zealand Motor Caravan Association - thank you for your support in sharing our Pass Wide and Slow road safety content with your considerable network of motorhome and caravan enthusiasts.”
“Taranaki Equestrian Network is delighted to support PWAS NZ. You have lifted the bar for equestrian advocacy in NZ and your leadership role-models excellent initiatives for all equestrian groups. We, at TEN, LOVE the professional, considerate, and intelligent approach you demonstrated in the PWAS campaign.”
“Horses play a huge part in recreation in New Zealand. The great work of the PWASNZ team is not only important for the safely of riders but also the safety and welfare of our horses. We support the work PWASNZ is doing to ensure we maintain safe riding spaces and in raising the publics awareness. ”
“We can create risk that is extremely low by ensuring that the right training and information is available to drivers of all ages and abilities. DT Driver Training (now part of TR Group) supports the Pass Wide and Slow New Zealand and the awareness it is raising in community.”

Your continued support has meant so much to the success of this kaupapa. We all thank you for leading the charge and walking the talk.
This phone call was a game changer!
Gerard Daldry, you listened, shared, showed us your safety measures on your trucks, shared with PWASNZ your Operations Safety Procedural Manual that’s had safety instructions around horses since 2006, and has now been updated to reflect Pass Wide & Slow messaging.
Your company philosophy ‘Constructing today, shaping tomorrow’ and leadership towards equestrians is outstanding.
Thank you for investing in riders by way of sponsorship towards hi-vis vests, printing of 10,000 Driver Empowerment Flyers and for your unequivocal support of Pass Wide & Slow New Zealand and for sponsoring this very important and life saving website.
“I went to Rakaia Pony Club and grew up around horses and trucks all my life. I understand the risk and relationship between road transport and a horse rider. I understand how horses think and act and I understand how truck drivers think and act. I think the message PWASNZ is putting out there is a good way of getting some common ground between the two for the safety benefit of everybody.”
