YOUR VOICE MATTERS!

Across New Zealand there are individuals and groups working hard to be a voice for equestrians in decision making.

Be a change maker!

Get informed about the issues affecting equestrians in their ability to be included and considered in local government decision making.

Participate passionately in any opportunities to provide insight, feedback and requests!

By working together and being a voice for all equines, we will be heard and we can make a difference to our right to be included in off road paths and trails and most importantly, road safety education and messaging.

Many, if not all, local councils have a 10-year plan around walking and riding infrastructure.

Sadly, many of these strategies simply have a focus on providing for walking and cycling recreational users only.

The good news is this doesn’t have to be the case, but it requires equestrians to tell their leaders they must be included as a user group.

Annual Plans

This is an opportunity to engage with your council’s elected members about what is important to you as a community of horse riders.

Take the opportunity to speak to a submission.

  • Share with them your desire for improved road safety signage with Pass Wide & Slow messaging in frequented riding areas.

  • Ask leaders to plan for designated horse-riding areas.

  • Ask that they audit all tracks and trails to determine if any can be made multi-use (used by horse riders, cyclists and walkers) and if there has been a case of existing rights taken away – request they be reinstated.

Like all things, writing your thoughts down in one thing, speaking to them elevates your cause.

Back yourself, your community of equestrians and be a voice for improved change!

Long Term Plans

This is a council’s vision in spend and priorities over a 10-year period, but it’s reviewed every three years!

Again, make this a priority in horse advocacy to participate - both in a written and verbal submission.

Gather the support of others who agree with your position.

Your message will be stronger when you unite those in your community.

** The Hurunui District Council’s Walking and Riding Strategy – 2050 is formalising a change in its direction for community and renaming its visionary document.**
