Why Hi Vis Matters
Hi Vis is a must to ensure drivers have the best chance to see us.
Why does hi vis matter? Because we as riders have only a few seconds to communicate with drivers – being visible is critical to helping drivers to see you and your animal – it also messages that you care about your life, and your animals and in turn, drivers should care about you.
We hear too many stories from drivers of their utter surprise in finding themselves “on top of a horse and rider”. The anecdotal evidence from drivers is an illustration that by lighting ourselves and our animals up, we give both ourselves and drivers the very best chance to make an informed and safe decision around approaching and passing equines on the road slowly and safely.

Drivers can see riders from a greater distance when we wear the right hi-vis gear.
Parsons Rump – this reflective strapping attaches to the saddle and is visible to motorists when approaching from behind. It has been designed and is patent by a UK rider. She has kindly given our PWASNZ co-founder permission for it to be made in New Zealand. Email our team for more details.
Reflective Boots – it’s important to have some form of visibility on horse’s legs. Movement and visibility is critical to being seen and drivers we have spoken with are appreciative of every measure being taken by riders/carriage drivers to be seen.
Helmet – a reflective strap around the helmet has proved to be a success by way of feedback from motorists. It’s visible from afar and the height of the rider in view of a motorist, increases your chance of being seen. These straps can also be secured around your angle for another cost effective measure in being seen.
